BREAKING NEWS: Racism, Ignorance Alive and Well in America

If you are depressed about the state of America, you may want to avoid this video.

A reporter interviews a bunch of folks at a Palin rally and whoa-nelly! There's just no way to prepare yourself for the kind of thinking that lots of us assumed had died out with burning crosses and pointy white hats. Through it all, a calm reporter nods and takes in all this hatred with the patience of a prison chaplain. Wait until you hear where he's from.

One thing is for sure, I surely detest Sarah Palin on so many levels but now I can add a new one: There's something about her that brings out the absolute worst in my countrymen; I am horrified and completely embarrassed by them. They are - cannot be - the future of America or we can just hang it up right now.

I'm still floored by that video. And I get a taste of it every time I go back to my hometown and talk to extended family. If I get one more "Obama is a Muslim" email, I might lose my mind.

Sadly, it seems to me that these people are a representation of so many Americans who reside in the "states between". All those red ones. I saw some folks on NBC this morning who have 20 guns in their house with all their kids and believe that we all should do the same.

The tools in this video live in a completely different reality than I do - one that is shared by way too many people.

I can't help but hope that they all lose their jobs and their homes in this economic meltdown. Something that would humble them and get them in touch with their own humanity.

Way to go O-HIGH-O.

Speaking of which, Chrissy Hynde moved back from the U.K. to her hometown of Akron, OH, and opened a vegan restaurant.

That's gotta balance things out at least a little, doesn't it?

HDW: I hear ya on that one, sister. I'm about to carouse with my Southern contingent and I'm afraid of what I'll hear. Thankfully, there will be lots of booze too.

QChick: Yes, that's why when I see those dadburn "United We Stand!" placards, I nearly loose my shit. We have been seriously divided for decades now and I see no end in sight.

MD: Really? That's awesome! She is pretty much my hero and this cinches it.
