Not Happening, Not Happening, Not Happening

Okay, okay, okay, this photo pretty much sums up my feelings about Sarah Palin - I just want the nightmare of lies to end. I want the horrible bamboozling to cease. I am beyond freaked out by this woman who has a credible chance at being a worse VP than Dick Cheney. Turns out that covering my eyes, putting my feet in the air and looking as cute as possible, doesn't really address the situation.

Here's a blazing factoid: OWNING A VAGINA DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE LOOKING OUT FOR WOMEN. IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU A FEMINIST ANY MORE THAN OWNING A FANCY KNIFE MAKES YOU A FOUR-STAR CHEF. Got it?

I sat in on a call today that featured Former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles and Mayor Bob Weinstein of Ketchikan – the city of the Bridge to Nowhere. A lot of interesting stuff came out on that call but two things stuck out to me:

The McCain campaign talked to exactly NOBODY in Alaska before Palin joined the ticket. As Knowles said:

"We cannot find any one person who was called - as an advocate or an adversary - in making in one of the most important decisions of the campaign. A question I would ask is, what kind of information was given to McCain? If you are going to hire a CEO or COO, there would be a lot more vetting going on."

Secondly, a little known fact came to light here. Evidently, when Palin was mayor of Wasilla, there was a law on the books that had rape victims being charged for forensics work. Both the mayor and the local police chief (whom she'd appointed) enforced this. When then-Governor Knowles signed a law that revoked this law, he was aghast. He recalls:

"I remember commenting aloud when I signed the bill how fundamentally off-base it was that Palin’s administration chose to charge victims for forensics. They fought the ban, saying it would cause them undue financial stress."

WTF? This is the same woman who can't bring herself to teach her kids (and is against anyone else doing so) about sex. Meanwhile, her 17-year-old gets knocked up by a self-described "fuckin' redneck" and it's all okay 'cause they're gonna get married! Awww!

A fellow voter (recognizable as the fuck buddy of Sarah Silverman) evidently shares my fears and sums it up nicely:

Here's the thing, Cliz. The more people in the reality-based community continue to get worked up over "Rhymes w/Failin'", the more powerful she becomes. Right wingers get their jollies pissing off people who assume that logic and reason have a place in our political discourse. I'm wondering if there is a way to cooly, calmly, and dispassionately repeat the point that this woman is utterly full of shit?

Hopefully, she'll hoist herself up by her own petard. She's clearly a vain person, and I can see her becoming emboldened by her time in the limelight and overreaching.

In the meantime, your state is critical to Obama's success. We need to redouble our efforts and push back against these Know Nothings. Keep up the good work. I'm going to start phone banking.

Sigh. You are 100% correct and I know it. This is what happens when I read too much and then sit here in my blogger chair and stew. There is an explosion of anxiety.

I hope you are right about her hanging herself with her own blowdryer cord. It seems inevitable.

I'll re-join the phone banking efforts as I see McCain signs popping up in my Denver neighborhood.

In case you didn't know, Cliz. This is Dowdy. I sometimes write comments w/out realizing I'm logged into my other Gmail account (the one where I play a mild-manner college professor instead of a winger-hatin' rage-a-holic.)

Fang figured out that this was me, so you probably did too.

Anyway, it's not like I haven't gone apoplectic over the McCain bounce lately, but I just realized that this energy would be better spent helping out Team Obama.

Luckily, I just moved into a new place that doesn't have a TV. No TV = no more inane horse-race punditry = lower blood pressure.

Ha! The funny thing is I did not know it was you, Dowdy, specifically because you did not sound ranty and angry enough. I guess you took on the mild-mannered persona pretty swiftly.

I think not having a TV is a good idea but I don't watch TV and I still get angry. Damn Internet.

I AM ABSOLUTELY BAFFLED BY WOMEN WHO ARE GOING TO VOTE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE OF A VAGINA!!

Okay, I'm done yelling, but seriously, what the eff is wrong with people? That Vagina doesn't support women's rights so it makes COMPLETE sense to vote her in.

I'm going to go beat something.

When they first made the announcement I couldn't understand it - to me Romney was the no brainer if they wanted to make it a real race.

I know people who would have voted for that ticket.

I don't for one minute think that the RNC and the people who pull the strings there are stupid, so I'm seriously thinking that they will steal the election, kill McCain and have this ridiculous woman do their evil bidding.

Rove is not out of the picture and he's not stupid - he knows no one will vote for anyone with the last name Bush. Has anyone wondered why Jeb's presidential aspirations went away?

There'something really screwed up going on here. I feel that feeling I felt when "war" was declared on Iraq because they had WMDs and were harboring Osama Bin Laden and sane people that I know were completely on buying all that BS.

Something stinks and it makes me very nervous about this upcoming election.

Did you catch her act on ABC news last night? I'm sure it's all over the internets for Luddites whose choose not to own TVs (Hi Mark!).

Stay strong - part two airs tonight. More talking-points, evasions and obfuscations are on their way, and they're being delivered by a person WITH A VAGINA!! Woohoo, where can I go vote?!

Heather Clisby said...

All I can say is, find me in a bar on November 4th - rot, stinking drunk. Once I've voted, of course.

Great post Cliz. I'm going to quote you all over town.

And now for something completely different...
just a couple things I never hear commented on...
you can teach a 17-year-old anything you want, it doesn't mean they'll listen...how many 17 year old's listen to their moms?
and it should be acknowledged - even if grudgingly - that Palin supported keeping same sex partner benefits.
that's all.
And for a "cool, calm, dispassionate" perspective on current politics, see:http://thebigredcouch-bitty.blogspot.com/2008/09/common-sense-proverbs-foam-fingers.html

Elizabeth - thanks for stopping by! I agree that most 17-year-olds are stubborn but withholding valuable information is not helpful. Pretending that abstinence is the answer is delusional. Makes me wonder - don't any of these folks remember how impossibly horny one gets at that age? Seriously, we're all made of the same stuff here.

Re: same sex partner benefits. I had NOT heard that info but thank you for sharing. That's very good news. Sounds like Palin is more progressive on this issue than McCain is.

We've got to all work to get out the vote. The only way we have a prayer in hell of beating this craziness and the continual specter of voter fraud through deceptive voting machines is to get out the vote in communities that are bound to vote for Obama.
